What is a Grain? |
Grains are a delicious part of our daily diet. A grain is a small dry seed that makes up most of the foods we eat. Once a grain is harvested, it can be used to make bread, rice, and other staple foods. They can even found in a lot of food we wouldn't even consider to contain grains. Foods that contain grains include: pasta, wheat, oatmeal, cornmeal, bread, cereals, and even tortillas. There are two types of grains to consider: Whole Grains & Refined Grains.

Bread
Bread can be one of the more delicious foods out there. However, it can also be the reasons your body is reacting to foods. Many of the breads you will find in your local grocery stores are simply white breads with grains and coloring added to them. They are merely knock-offs of fresh homemade bread. The delicious dough can be loaded with sugar and contain minimal fiber so you are more likely to feel less full and as a result eat more.

Healthier Choice: Buy bread from your local fresh bakery. This bread is typically made with local ingredients and less unnecessary ingredients. Stick with 100% whole-grain products. It will provide you with a healthy amount of complex carbohydrates and fiber so you will feel full longer. But make sure to skip the health benefits on the front and focus on the ingredient list on the back to make sure the bread is made of 100% whole-grain ingredients.
Gluten |
Gluten is a combination of proteins that naturally occur in wheat, rye, barley and other mixtures of these grains. It is the protein that gives gluten products a chewy texture, a richer taste, and helps the dough rise. Unfortunately, we are not able to remove the gluten from wheat products, so food industries came up with other substitutions.
Gluten Free Bread This is when your food becomes dangerous to eat and you might feel your body rejecting all different types of food. In the chart below we listed the ingredients that make us Udi's Gluten Free White Bread. When water and egg whites become the only natural food ingredients in your bread it’s a call for a change. To obtain the same great taste and texture as wheat bread, many gluten free breads are packed with processed ingredients. Healthier Choice: Gluten free products are some of the more dangerous products because many people assume they are choosing the healthier choice. Unless you are gluten free I would recommend sticking with local and fresh homemade bread. For those of you who are gluten free I would either cut out bread form my diet or make your own fresh gluten free bread. |
*Warning: Hidden Gluten does exist. Gluten is not only in bread and crackers but also in a lot of processed foods such as: soy sauce, candy, chips, gravy, sausage, and soups. Manufactures use gluten to thicken food and give a richer taste. Weirdly enough, many cosmetics and medications also contain gluten. Make sure to look for warning signs of gluten and read the ingredient list just to be sure.
So, what happens when someone who is Gluten Free or has Celiac Disease eats Gluten? |
Typically when people who have Celiac disease or are highly intolerant eat gluten they are slowly destroying their small intestines. Many people can have other symptoms as well. The gluten that is not digested combines with digestive enzymes and once in the immune system is seen as a foreign substance. Then immune system then triggers itself to attack this foreign substance, where is inflames the walls of the small intestines.
Over time our bodies begin to reject certain types of food that is difficult to digest. When food is not properly digested it begins to build up acid, which leads to inflammation in the body and affects our balanced hormones. |
