What's really cheaper? |
Too expensive! Many times the less healthy food option seems cheaper which helps us, the customers, look past the ingredient list or the nutrition facts label. The unhealthy food is already prepared and ready to eat, saving us the money of buying all of the ingredients (and clean up time) of making the food ourselves. The cheaper-seeming option isn’t always cheaper in the long run, however, because if you actually bought all of the ingredients for a food item to make it from scratch, the portions used of the ingredients are usually much cheaper.

How do I get the Best for My Buck? |
Farmers Markets. Many people are unaware that they live down the street from some of the freshest produce around. Produce and food at your local farmers market have not been processed by the FDA. There are no labels to read from and you know exactly where it came from. You can even ask one-on-one questions with the farmers and people selling the produce. Sometimes the farmers markets can be expensive but a lot of the time their seasonal produce can be cheaper. Compare prices from your local grocery store to your local farmers market.
Grow your own garden. This way you know where your produce came from. Eat everything you buy. Households tend to through away hundreds of dollars of food a year because of expiration and people forgetting they bought it. Use your leftovers the next day. Bulk Up. When a product goes on sale, like fish or meat, buy a couple and stick them in the freezer. Not only do you save money but this also saves you time. Pull the fish/meat out of the freezer the day you prepare it to let thaw. |
Overbuying?
Make a list. We spend more money in the store when we don’t have a plan.
Eat before going to the store. Especially something healthy and filling. This way you are less likely to spend money on unnecessarily delicious items your body is craving. Shop alone. Do not bring your kids along. This will subside the nagging effect and you will focus more on what you are buying and food labels. |
